Moisturizers are used to restore the protective barrier function of the skin (epidermis), to cover and seal tiny openings or cracks in the skin, thereby providing a soothing protective film which helps increase the water-content of the epidermis. By slowing evaporation of the skin's moisture, skin maintains hydration and improves the appearance and texture of dry, damaged or aging skin. Newer moisturizing products which contain much greater amounts of antioxidant vitamins, herbal plant extracts, alpha-hydroxies, collagen, lipids, keratin and elastin help to provide anti-aging, skin-firming, and sun-protectant effects. The "Science" behind skin moisturizers: Epidermal water content is crucial for skin elasticity and for the prevention of dry skin. Proper skin moisturization inhibits trans-epidermal water loss by preventing the passage of water out of the upper layers of the epidermis. Since water originates in the deeper epidermal layers and moves upward to hydrate cells in the 'stratum corneum' (the upper dermis), water may be eventually lost to evaporation. Moisturizers in the form of lotions, creams and serums help impede water loss due to evaporation in the upper dermis. Moisturizers increase skin hydration significantly and when moisturizers are used to hydrate and improve skin elasticity, dermatologists usually suggest using lipid-rich formulas. Moisturizing skin lotions and treatments repair the skin barrier, retain and increase water content, restore the lipid barriers' ability to attract, hold and redistribute water maintaining the skin's integrity and appearance. Moisturizers perform these functions by acting as humectants [promote water retention], emollients [soothe & soften], and occlusives [assist in absorbing and retaining moisture]. Notably, many products may also contain parabens, sorbates and glycols to assist in preserving the beneficial properties of the products.
